Allow us a moment of reflection...There are two stories that many third-wave coffee lovers share, especially Millennials (no shade): Folks often mark their entrance into the industry when they tasted their first Natural Ethiopian coffee, that undeniable blueberry note! The other story is one's first time tasting the Gesha variety.
SK has been exploring, sourcing, and roasting Gesha varieties for 7 years now. And despite its seemingly overhyped and ubiquitous nature, it is a variety that continues to impress, time and time again. The history of Gesha is often short-sighted because the modern Gesha legend roots itself in Panama. But just like ALL of Coffea Arabica, Gesha too is more accurately rooted in Ethiopia.
Fast-forward centuries...Gesha Village has done something extraordinary for the Ethiopian and broader specialty coffee industries. Its founders, Rachel Samuel, Adam Overton, and Willem Boot, began developing land in the far western part of Ethiopia (West Omo zone), an area essentially disconnected from the Ethiopian coffee scene. But that region holds something special: it is a stone's throw away from the Gori Gesha forest, the true birthplace of the Gesha variety! They started their now-massive 471-hectare estate by harvesting wild Gesha seeds from the Gori Gesha forest. Right from the source!
If we were music historians, this would be like performing Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantatas straight from Bach's own hand-written scores! What an absolute treat for us to be able to be positioned in such a way to bring something like this to the Twin Cities! Gesha from Gesha Village, strains of the variety found right in the soil where Gesha was born. Enjoy, we know we will!
